Power Play Showdown - GT vs RR analysis by Reddy Anna Book

In IPL cricket, the first six overs are no time waster for the main event. They're the big attraction. Usually the set-up, the cycle of play and even the outcome of the game, are determined by the power play (special offer in which only 2 players are fielded outside the 30 yard limit). Dominant teams throughout their power play thus win most of the T20 games. The side with less power play points have to play catch-up in the next 14 overs. In the GT vs RR IPL 2026 play-off in the first 12 balls of the match, the story has been read and analyzed by Reddy Anna.

The Raiders however, were very calm in the middle and Rajasthan Royals found their openers up and they seemed to have a very definite goal in mind and were hopeful to put it into action. The captain of the GT had set his field with two slips, a BP, mid-off and mid-on put up back to the boundary and a fine leg. Just a normal new ball field; aggressive, set up for trying to make opportunities outside off-stump when the ball is doing something off the surface. RR's openers heard it at once, and replied with purpose not hesitation.

RR's Power Play — Setting the Platform

The first over of the game put the pressure on. GT opened his IPL bowling account one of the best they'll get on the new ball, and he took ball 1 and ball 2 for fours. Not on the edge, not through the slip, but clean, clear shots played off the front foot through unexpected open space created by the field that GT had left open. When the third delivery came out, the spinner had already started his movements, making the off square the position he had got GT into. That time change in pitch opened up that straight drive thing even more. RR's hit it for the rich side of the plate.

It's really interesting the psychology of being a first-time play-off batter. The team that is batting first doesn't have a scoreboard to run to - it has a scoreboard to raise. When there is no need to press for a run, world class players can just play their ‘normal, natural, naturalised’ game, feel and follow their own instincts, and see that runs will follow if they are hitting the ball well and taking intelligent fields. This was perfectly reflected in RR's openers. They didn't go about chasing sixes like some drunken emperors, but produced scores down the field and particularly when they had the opportunity, they pushed the ropes to score and were not stingy on chasing wickets off cheap deliveries despite the speed at which they built their score.

GT's Power Play Challenge

The first 6 overs was a miniature of the game's hardships for the bowlers of GT. They adhered to their plans with bowing. They hit their stride. They rose to their length. They took up pace changes. They attempted a short, full and slower ball. Each variation gave the same outcome – a confident and technically competent batsman who had studied the variation before they bowled it – or adjusted rapidly enough to not make much difference. The sign of a team batting superbly is not that the bowling is bad but that the bowling is made to look bad by the quality of the batting. It was the same in O/S 1-6.

The Power Play Phase

In IPL cricket, the power play is more important on a mathematical basis than it is in other formats as it takes up 30% of the game and the runs scored in those 6 overs contribute anywhere between 35% to 40% of the total score. A side scoring in the double-figures in the power play will be posting a number that they will need an outstanding performance of the bowlers to hold up. RR's power play rate in the match was more than that limit and it was evident that the 40,000-plus fan at the ground felt it could not be challenged. So did the GT bowlers. It was quite an early move, but by the sixth over it was clearly a match that had gone up RR's side.

Conclusion

The power play was the determining play. RR have dominated, GT bats not even able to get a single wicket and the vibes were set for one of the most powerful first-innings feats witnessed in play-offs of the IPL 2026.
